SYNOPSIS

Every weekend, a group of gay men gather around the heart of Seoul, to sing. They are more like a bunch of amateurs than a harmonized choir, but they are voicing up for themselves and others suffering.

G-Voice is the one and only gay men’s choir in South Korea. They are all amateur singers, but their passion paves its way to the 10th anniversary. With the big concert only a few days ahead, they are invited to perform at the very first gay wedding in Korea, where members are assaulted with fecal water by a homophobic group. However, “give up” is not in G-Voice’s dictionary, they keep singing for equality and against all kinds of discrimination. Will G-Voice’s 10th anniversary concert succeed? This glossy music documentary sheds light on the gay men’s hardship and joy in Korean society.

DIRECTOR'S BIO

Director LEE DONG-HA. Born in Busan, Korea, he studies Aesthetics in university and has documented the annual concerts and various activities of G-Voice since 2009. He believes honest documentation reveals contradictions of the world, captures remarkable moments, and lets us retrospect the overlooked values of life. 'Weekend' is his first feature length documentary as a film director and he is now developing a fiction project on a gay choir.

PROGRAMMER’S NOTE

This simultaneously enjoyable and eye-opening documentary introduces you to G-voice, the first gay choir in South Korea. Director Dong-ha Lee reveals the discrimination and hatred against sexual minorities that persists to this day in Korea. However, at the same time the film cheerfully portrays how the choir members heal their pain and support each other through their performance and solidarity. The film won an audience award in 2016 Berlin international film festival, and toured many other major film festivals including Seoul international film festival and Busan international film festival.
