Spring auction sees new records, after-auction sale

Last Updated: Tuesday, May 31, 2005 | 9:37 AM ET

A joint spring auction of Canadian art had both ups and downs Monday, with several artists setting new sales records while another languished on the block until after the auction's end.
The hammer fell successfully in Toronto for a number of traditionally popular artists at the Sotheby's Canada and Richies Auctioneers and Appraisers sale . The snow-filled, early 1920s A.Y. Jackson painting entitled In Jasper Park – estimated to sell for $200,000 to $300,000 – went for $548,750. Spirited bidding met Autumn, Algonquin Park, a small Tom Thomson oil panel, which sold for $428,000. Marc-Aurèle Fortin's large and colourful village scape, Near St. Simeon, Quebec, sold for $462,500.
All three were new records for the respective artists.

"Thomson's so hard to get," David Loch, who purchased the Thomson and the Jackson on behalf of undisclosed clients, told CBC News. "There's a lot of very serious collectors in this country who never have the opportunity to get a Thomson in their collection."
However, the auction's much-touted Eight Red Houses by Group of Seven member Lawren Harris was left on the block only to be picked up later in the afternoon, after the auction had ended. Sotheby's Canada president David Silcox had expected a quick post-auction sale of the work, as a number of buyers approached organizers after the painting was withdrawn.

Completed between 1924 and 1926, the Harris work was expected to sell between $400,000 and $600,000. However, when the bidding stopped at $275,000, organizers withdrew it . The work is among Harris's early paintings of Toronto street scenes and houses in an inner-city immigrant neighbourhood south of the University of Toronto.
"I don't want to be glib about it, but I think the Harris [didn't sell because it] doesn't have any snow in it. And Canadians like to buy snow," Silcox said.
In the past, Harris paintings have sold for millions. The Brantford, ont.-born artist was responsible for the most expensive Group of Seven painting ever sold at auction: Baffin Island, which he painted in 1930, sold for $2.5 million in 2001. Almost exactly a year ago, Harris's largest known work – a wintry scene entitled Winter in the Northern Woods – sold for just shy of its $1.5-million pre-sale estimate.
In recent years, more Canadian art has sold at auction for record prices, with art collectors buzzing over the heights to which works might go.
Not counting the Harris sale – which organizers revealed they sold to an unnamed buyer for close to $400,000 – the auction took in a total of $6.9 million, with more than 90 per cent of the 205 lots of art sold. The two auction houses will collaborate for another sale of Canadian art on Nov. 21.
