Jeronimo

| TIFF Bell Lightbox, Cinema 3

In 2015, lawyer-turned-filmmaker Joseph Juhn embarked on a backpacking trip to Havana, where the first person he struck up a conversation with was his airport taxi driver; a Korean-Cuban woman. What began as a vacation became a candid journey of discovering the untold history of Korean-Cuban diaspora centered around the legacy of one man: Jeronimo Lim.

Born in the 1920s to servant parents in Cuba, Jeronimo Lim became the first Korean-Cuban to enroll in university. He eventually became a prominent member of the Cuban Revolution and Fidel Castro’s government. Over the course of 3 years, Juhn unravels a remarkable network of stories that not only illustrates the impact Jeromino had on the Korean Cuban history, but the deep ties forged by his family’s legacy between the troubled past of Cuba and a divided Korea. Jeronimo is an exemplary film that defies borders and brings new meaning to identity and self-discovery.
