오늘 내남자가 오늘날이라, 그로서리쇼핑도하고, 침구 세탁도 하고, 집안청소하는등..이런것은 기본이다.게다가 요즘 내가 산 믹서기로 디톡스주스를 만들어 보는데...토마토,당근,양배추,브로콜리를 스팀요리를 한다음에 그것들을 재료별로 용기에 분리해서 담아두고...프로틴 파우더도 사러가고...그리고 저녁에 내남자가먹을만한 그라인드 터키요리도 오븐으로 해놓고.....아 정말 할일이 끊기지 않아서 쉴 시간도 없다. 오늘이 무슨요일인지도 가끔 까먹고,,내가 쉬는날은 주말로 착각하기도 한다. 

 

내남자가 저녁8시에 기차로 토론토 유니언역에 도착한다. 그래서 기차역으로 내남자를 마중나가서 내남자 손을 잡고 집으로 돌아와서..내남자와 침대에서 시간을 좀갖고는.. 친구가 내집에 오늘밤 자고 간다고해서...친구 오기전에 일어나서 내남자의 허기진배를 채워줄 그라인드 터키에 야채를 넣고, 치즈를 넣어서 만든요리를 내놓고...내가 만든 디톡스 주스도 만들어 주었더니 맛있게 먹어치운다. 내남자 너무 잘 먹는것같은데..

바깥에는 비가 쏟아지는데....내친구가 도착해서...친구가 사온 맥주를 마시며 이야기하는동안, 그이야기를 들어주고, 같이 이야기하다가 내남자와 같이 내친구에게 잘자라고하고 내방으로 들어와서 내남자와 잠자리로 같이 들어간다. 내남자를 그동안 보지못해서 섭섭했는데, 이렇게 같이 시간을 보낼수있어서 정말 좋다. 

 

1월 11일 토요일.

오늘은 느즈막하게 아침에 눈을 뜨니, 9시가 다 되었다. 그래서 나는 일어나서 친구아침도 만들생각으로 일어나서 아침을 준비하려는데, 친구가 바깥에 나갔다가 들어와서는 아침을 맥도날드에서 먹었다고, 자기는 아침을 않먹는다고 한다. 그래서 내남자와 내가 먹을 아침을 준비한다. 오늘 아침은 방울 토마토 반으로 자르고, 콩나물, 호박, 당근등의 야채를 준비해서 잘게 자른후에 후라이팬에 기름치고 고기와 분리해서 야체를같이 요리하다가 계란을 깨트려서 풀어 야채와 같이 믹스해서 요리했다. 캐리비안 스타일의 요리를 내가 가진재료를 사용해서 만드는 아침을 시도해보았는데...내남자가 맛있다고 잘 먹어준다.아침을 먹고 오늘 볼만한 영화가 있는지 첵크하다가 한국영화 Forbidden Dream 을 발견하고는 내남자에게 이걸보여주고 싶기도해서, 이영화를 보러 가는게 어떠냐고 제안했다. 그래서 내남자와 오후 3시20분에 노스욕시빅센터에서 상영하는 영화를 보러가기로했다. 그래서 집에서 쉬다가 오후에 점심으로 디톡스 주스를 마시고,스낵을준비해서  극장으로 출발하는데, 밖에는 비가내린다. 지하철을 타고가는데, St, Clair 까지 지하철이 운행되고, 그다음에는 쉐퍼드까지 셔틀버스로 가야한다. 그래서 생각지못하게 시간이 더 걸리게 되었는데..그래서 쉐퍼드역에 버스가 도착하니 벌써 3시20분이 지났다. 그래서 서둘러 한정거장을 지하철로 이동하는데..5분정도 기다려서 지하철로 도착해서 영화관매표소에 갔더니 줄이 길다. 그래서 발매기에서 내남자의 신용카드로 표를 사서 들어갔다. 이미 영화는 상영되고 있었고....세종대왕이 한국역사에서 아주 중요한인물임을 감안해볼때,이영화는 내남자에게도 한국을 이해하는데 도움이 될거라는 생각이 든다. 이영화가 역사적인 사실을 바탕으로한 실증적인 자료를 얼마나 따라갔는지는 모르겠지만...세종대왕이 독립적인 한국인의 기술과 언어를 개발해서 국민들의 삶에 도움을 주겠다는 의지에 영의정이라는 말하자면 국무총리격인 자가 지속적으로 중국 당나라의 의견을 대변하는 발언으로 세종왕의 의지와는 대립되는 구도를 보여주는것은 내가 예상치못했던 내용들이었다. 교실안의 역사수업시간에는 시대의 특징과 업적들을 주로 가르쳐줄뿐이지 그당시 사회의 상황을 이해하는데 도움이 되는 수업을 하는것은 아니었으니..나는 그런상황에대해서 한번도 생각해본적이 없이 그저 세종대왕깨서 한글을 연구하기위한 집현전을 설치하고, 그시대에 장영실이라는 분이 해시계,물시계,천체를 관측하는 혼천의,관측 천문대,활자인쇄기......등등 을 만들었다는것만 배웠는데.. 장영실이 중국인 아버지와 기생사이에서 태어난 천민노비의 신분이었다는것도 영화를 통해서 처음알았다. 아무튼 이영화는 역사적인 사실안에서 왕과의 천민신분의 뛰어난 자질을 가진 장영실간의 친분관계에 중점을 둔 영화이다. 

이 영화를보고 나오니 비가내리면서 바람이 심하게 불어댄다. 그래서 그 주변에 많은 한인상가를 가는것을 포기하고 그냥 집으로 돌아왔다.이런 짖궂은 날씨에는 집에서 지내는게 상책이다.

 

1월12일 일요일.

햇살이 뜨는 아침이다. 내남자와 아침9시경에 일어나서 아침을 준비한다. 오늘은 아침을 먹고, 내남자가 오타와에서 알고지내는 사람을 만나서 커피한잔을 하러 간다. 이친구는 내남자를 짐에서 훈련시키는 퍼스널 트레이너의 동생인데, 스트립폴댄서로 일하는 청년이다. 기본적으로 짐에서 운동하는데 시간을 많이 보내는듯하다. 주고객들이 결혼식파티를 하는 여성들이라는....커피샵에서같이 이야기를 나누고 커피를 마신후에 내남자랑 가까이에 있는 세인트 로렌스 마켓에 한번들러봤는데..일요일은 문을 닫는듯하다. 단지 임시로 지어진 텐트에서는 벼룩시장같은 장이 서있었다. 벼룩시장을 한번 돌아보고 집으로 돌아오는길에 내남자가 지하철을 타자고 해서, 지하철을 타고 집으로 돌아왔다. 집으로 돌아와서는 침대에서 내남자와 시간을 보내면서 휴일을 보냈다. 서로를 터치하는 시간...그런 시간이 가져다주는 행복한 시간들이다. 그런시간에 낮잠에 푹 빠져버린 내남자...나는 일어나서 디톡스 주스를 만들어서, 그것으로 점심을 대신한다. 나중에 께어난 내남자와 주스를 같이 마시고...저녁에는 고기를 구워서 쌈싸먹는걸로 마무리하고...사놓았던 도토리묵도 잘라서내놓고...그런데 내가 도토리묵 소스를 좀 만들어봐야겠다는 생각이 든다.

King Sejong the Great (1397 - 1450) was acknowledged as an outstanding ruler of Korea’s Joseon dynasty at least partly because of the remarkable advances in science that took place during his reign. The king prized scientific and technological developments—from calendar systems to traditional Korean medicine—that would help his nation succeed, honoring inventors for their gifts, whatever social class they came from. 

The film Forbidden Dream, released in December 2019, follows the story of King Sejong, played by Han Suk-kyu and his prize inventor, Jang Yeong-sik, played by Choi Min-sik, as they pursued celestial research. 

Jang was born a slave but his talents eventually earned him a government position. As agriculture was essential to the nation’s economic development, the king sought scientific, astronomical instruments to provide more precise weather and seasonal information. He asked Jang to create instruments that would measure the stars and the seasons.

 

Despite their class differences, historical records indicate that the two men became close. Yet little is known about Jang’s ultimate fate. After a palanquin Jang designed for the king fell apart, he was questioned by the court, then sentenced to 80 floggings for his faulty design. There is no further historical record of Jang after this incident.

Jang’s creations were so extraordinary for his time that the Ming Empire ordered Joseon to cease its astronomical studies and demanded that Jang be sent there at once. This greatly troubled the king, but history does not record what followed. The mystery of what happened next piqued the interest of the film’s director Hur Jin-ho, who previously directed Christmas in August, one Fine Spring Day, Happiness, and The Last Princess.

“I was interested in knowing that there weren’t many historical records on Jang Yeong-sil,” said Hur. “I wondered what went wrong between Sejong and Jang Yeong-sil, despite all their great inventions together, and why Jang suddenly disappeared from historical records. I wanted to use these questions and add imagination to tell the story of the two geniuses.”

Forbidden Dream stars two veteran Korean film actors, Choi Min-sik, who appeared in the films  The Admiral: Roaring Currents, The Tiger, and Old Boy;and Han Suk-kyu, who appeared in films such as The Idol and The Prison and the TV drama series, Watcher. This film provided a reunion for the actors who previously appeared together in the 1997 film No. 3 and the 1999 film Swiri. 

“I was very happy as a director see the two actors together on the same screen,” said Hur. They’ve given outstanding performances that audiences can really look forward to.” 

Choi was attracted to Forbidden Dream because it focused on the friendship between a king and a former slave.

“I was intrigued by how the film focuses on the relationship between King Sejong and Jang Yeong-sil and not so much on their well-known accomplishments, so I got involved in it,” said Choi.

It’s not Han’s first time playing King Sejong but portrayal required a different interpretation. In the 2011 SBS drama series Deep Rooted Tree, Han portrayed a troubled and sensitive King Sejong, rather than a benevolent one. 

“When I was filming Deep Rooted Tree, I once thought that if King Sejong had a friend whom he could speak his mind to, it would be Jang Yeong-sil,” said Han. “So I was very happy and excited to come across this story.” 

Hur tried to imagine what King Sejong would have done when he was ordered to deliver his close friend to the Ming Dynasty.

“I thought much about the relationship between King Sejong and Jang Yeong-sil, who recognized each other and supported each other’s dreams, regardless of their status differences,” said Hur. “Perhaps they depended on each other like friends. I thought about their relationship and what their feelings may have been.”

The film, which also stars Gu, Kim Hong-pa, Huh Jun-ho, Kim Tae-woo, Oh Gwang-lok, Kim Won-hae, Lim Won-hee, Park Sung-hoon and Jeon Yeo-bin, imagines what might have happened when King Sejong was pressured to make his fateful choice. 

As of Dec. 31,  Forbidden Dream rated second in the Korean box office with over four million tickets sold. The film will be available in U.S. theaters in January.
